Hope you're having another good snow day! I'm not sure if you saw the email from Sharon, but Briana dropped the class so it's just us 3 now!
I wanted to get started on the Virtual Penpals as quickly as possible so that we aren't stressed on Saturday and Sunday like we were last time... so here's the post we will use for this assignment!
The Google Map is to be embedded into the blog and the Google Doc about the Virtual Penpals will just be a link on this post of the blog! I attached the Template for the Lesson Plan for the Virtual Penpals so we can get started. Under each question that needs to be answered for this assignment, I already put a few answers. Under questions that I didn't answer/understand/wanted your input, I just put in two question marks. Please, add, change, or delete anything I already put in. Besides, this is for brainstorming!
This is supposed to kind of go along with our concept map project (Greenhouse) so I was thinking the lesson for this could be the Greenhouse Effect! I know we already put it that on our concept map before but we can already modify anything. Let me know what you guys think!!
Audience:
- What age/grade are your students?
- 1st-3rd graders
- Who will they be communicating with? (Age, location...etc.)
- 1st-3rd graders
- Location: Costa Rica
Objectives: (check out bloom's taxonomy)
- Apply, Understand, Analyze
Timing:
- When will this take place in your unit? Before or after another lesson etc.?
- At the end of a lesson, to wrap up the lesson
- Is there prior knowledge they must have?
- Need to have no prior knowledge
- About how long will it take? (Weeks, days, hours?)
- Weeks- allow students to explore and research and have a chance to connect with penpals.
Technologies:
- List technologies that will be used in this lesson.
- Computers and an email site
Format: (Interview style? Free-form?..etc.)
- How will the penpal discussion take place?
- Through email
- What will you provide to guide discussions?
- Small lecture, visual aids,
- What types of questions will students be asking?
- What is it like where you live? What do you do on a day to day basis? What is farming/gardening like by you? What are the best and suitable vegetables in your area? Do you have greenhouses or other sorts of gardening practices/techniques? ...
- What type of information will they have to share?
- Where they live, farming/gardening practices/techniques, what they do on a day to day basis. ...
- How will you be sure that students are being safe with sharing their information?
- Having the students only share the general location of where they live. Especially if they are talking to someone across the world, something as simple as West Michigan is sufficient for the other to know where in general they are talking about.
- Only sharing their first name or maybe even a nickname with their penpal.
- How will you check in with students as they proceed?
- Monitor each email before sent.
- Have a rubric to fill out to monitor what students ask from their penpal.
Product: (Outcome - Assessment)
- What physical project will students produce from their penpal interactions? (Informal reflection, final presentation, vlog, blog article...etc.)
- Final presentation to show reflection and knowledge
- How will they synthesize and share the information they have learned from this activity?
- Create a presentation for the class- a little more complex for 4th or 5th graders. OR even create a story/picture book for younger students
- How will you assess students?
- I think a rubric would be a good starting point to allow students to ask certain questions and gain knowledge. Also, will be able to compare and contrast.
- How will this tie into the larger PBL unit?
- This will allow students to learn about different vegetables that grow in these areas and why they grow here. Students will learn that the environment is very different and these vegetables grow best in certain circumstances. This covers greenhouses in PBL research project. We address the facts and reality of the greenhouse and it's effects in and outside of the environment/atmosphere.
I think this is a good start!! I like the questions that you have brainstormed for the kids to ask each other, however I don't know how that relates to the Greenhouse Effect? I think that just having them learn about the gardening practices of other cultures and what fruits/vegetables/other plants other regions around the world, relates enough to our topic!! I also added a few things to the original post by editing it but I put my additions in a new color!
ReplyDeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteI think we should either do the greenhouse effect and change some questions in the template or do gardening habits around the world. If we were to do gardening we could explore areas in China or Asia that has a lot of gardening and land but the vegetation is very different here.
Dakota
I also looked through our template and added some stuff in orange. I think we need to discuss the location so I can try to make a google maps.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
Dakota
Sounds great! Dakota, I like your idea about Gardening Habits. If that sounds better to you guys, I'm all for switching the topic to that!
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure what happened with my account but it switched my gmail accounts or something so disregard the comment above that says "Unknown".
ReplyDeleteWhat I was going to say was,
Sounds great! Dakota, I like your idea about Gardening Habits. If that sounds better to you guys, I'm all for switching the topic to that! I think having the location in the Central America will be more fun for children to learn about, I know it was for me. I was thinking maybe Jamaica or the Dominican Republic? What do you guys think?
Rachel
That sounds good. I also like Costa Rica I know they grow a lot of crops such as coffee. But I do agree it would be fun for students to research and be virtual penpals with.
ReplyDeleteDakota
was also looking over the assignment details and professor peterson had an example of comparing and contrasting different vegetables from our location (central america). We could even integrate the best vegetables to garden here and there. Just another idea. Let me know what you guys think!
ReplyDeleteThanks
Dakota
Hey guys!
ReplyDeleteSorry for not being on here today!! However I really like the gardening habits idea and I think Costa Rica is a great location!!! Dakota if you want to go ahead and start the google map that's perfect!! I was a little confused about that part of the assignment so you got it!
Ok Awesome!
ReplyDeleteI will start the google map today. I was hoping we could fine tune our assignment above so we could turn it in. And gardening habits sounds good from students here and in Costa Rica.
Thanks guys!!
Dakota
Are we turning in the lesson plan on here or is their a dropbox open for it? I didn't see anything on this week's module to turn it in on elearning.
ReplyDeleteThis week, the assignment is 2 parts which are both group work. You will be using Google Maps and Google Docs to create an assignment with a class in another country. Please read the instructions thoroughly. The Google Map will be "embedded" into your blog and the Google Doc will have an URL link in the blog. Be sure to communicate on your blog. (Remember, you lose points if you do not communicate each week on your blog). I will be checking for blog usage every week now." Professor put this up
ReplyDeleteI also made some final changes, if you guys want to add anything please do so. I also tried to change the text color to all black and was not successful lol. Not sure if the author- rachel needs to do it.
ReplyDeleteDakota
So this blog post is us turning in the lesson plan? I read that and the instructions for this week I was just making sure that we aren't submitting the lesson plan on elearning.
ReplyDeleteOh wait I see, I can put everything into a google doc and put the link into a post!! What does she mean by the map should be embedded? Dakota is your post with the link sufficient? Or should I put it int he post with the link to the google doc?
ReplyDeleteHey Cora! What you posted looks good, I tried to do that and couldn't get it like that. Thanks! Now we just need to do the lesson plan into a google doc and put the link on our blog. I think it is pretty final just want you guys to look and make final touches. And cora its not really a lesson plan we just have to fill out each area like a lesson plan, I believe.
ReplyDeleteDakota
Hey Dakota! I actually put everything into a google doc already and linked it in the post above with our google map!! & yeah it was kinda confusing but I figured it out lol!
ReplyDeleteOh okay thank you I did not notice the google doc!
ReplyDeleteDakota
Sorry I wasn't on here yesterday! Looks like we tied up all the loose ends and details finished! I love the Costa Rica idea, Is everything submitted on here?
ReplyDeleteI see the Google Map (great work Dakota!), and all we need for the Google Doc lesson plan is a URL!
I'm liking how this is turning out!
Rachel
Rachel,
ReplyDeleteThe url for the google doc is in that post! It's underneath the map and in the explanation of the map I said that the link was below it!!
